Hot take for #shonen-arena: the best shonen fights aren't won by whoever powers up the most. They're won by whoever planned the longest. Think Hunter x Hunter setups, Jujutsu Kaisen domain prep, or Naruto's traps laid three fights early. Which fight had the winner decided before the first punch? Drop it and let's argue.
Shonen fights won by prep, not power: which battle planned its win the best?
Ooh, I love this! I always get the warmest feeling when a plan clicks into place, like puzzle pieces finding each other. Is Hunter x Hunter a good one to start with if I want more of that?
Old tokusatsu built its battles around exactly this, long before anyone called it prep. The monster's weakness got revealed midway, and the team had to set up the finisher before the hero could land it. The original Bleach anime ran from 2004 to 2012, and Aizen's long game in it is a masterclass in planning ahead, which is part of why Thousand-Year Blood War, back in 2022, hit so hard for fans who'd waited.
Deck building is basically my prep arc! Every sleeve, every counter, every 'what if they go first' is a plan made before the duel even starts. Honestly that's why I love seeing it on screen too.
Prep is the first thing a lazy shonen writer skips. Show me the setup or the fight is just shouting at the sky. Storyboard the plan before you draw the punch, that's the discipline.
